The first graders in Room 5 have been hard at work during Writers Workshop. The boys and girls have been learning things they need to do in order to become "Great 1st Grade Writers".
Here are some ways you can encourage your child to keep up the hard work at home:
1. They need to write stories involving topics they know and enjoy. Remember, writing should be FUN!!
2. Have your children share their stories with you at home. The more response they get, the more they will want to write.
3. Make sure your children focus on one idea. Instead of a story about the entire day, they need to write about one part of the day. They will include details that tells about what happened at that time.
4. Your children should draw pictures that match their stories. The illustrations should include details that give information to support the idea of the piece.
5. LET THEM WRITE!! I know you all want to help make sure everything is spelled perfectly and looks great. However, these boys and girls are still developing their phonics skills. Allow them to spell by stretching out the words and spelling to the best of their ability. At this point you should be able to read the words they write even though it might not be spelled accurately. (EX: "famle" for "family" shows that they know their letter sounds and can apply the skill in their writing.
The friends in Room 5 love to write! Please nurture that love at home!
